At first glance it may look like a standard plaid shirt, but the outer layer is designed to appear translucent. The plaid is actually printed on the inner layer, so it subtly shows through and “reflects” on the surface.
In areas where creases naturally occur — like the shoulders and underarms — the plaid print fades or disappears. This creates the effect that movement breaks up the pattern, almost as if the outer layer and inner layer are separate.
The collar highlights this idea, combining both the visible plaid underneath and a plain white contrast. It’s finished with a large solid white chest pocket, adding another point of contrast against the otherwise sheer body.
A deceptively simple but clever design from Issey Miyake, especially for the early 90s.
